TYPOGRAPHY IN PUBLIC SPACE

 The sign and font used for the dollar store on essex are just very unappealing. They are way off balance and seem to be printed on garbage bag plastic strips. The size are way off and contrast they were going for just does not work. They building it is posted on is a modern building with very high renter and the renters have complained about ugly look of the sign and how it diminishes the aesthetics of the building.

 The Manhattan Unisex salon sign is very old and shabby. It looks like it is about to fall off the wall and is off balance with the red brick of the building. yes the bricks are red but this sign is a faded pink cheap fabric that uses the contrast red and white but falls short to grab anyone's attentions past thinking no thanks. I gives off a cheap and unfashionable vibe, two things you are not looking for when searching for a salon.

 The Signs and fonts used for the old EL SOMBRERO sign are all over the place and fading. The use three or four different types of fonts and sizes with no balance or clarity. The emotions it raises are old, dirty, unorganized and randomness all things you do no want to feel when choosing a place to dine. It seems as if they added signs over time and never took down the old one, the negative space does not balance any positive space because they just left sign up in the negative space. It just comes off as gaudy, cheap and unappealing.

 The sign for this generic cell phone store is exactly that generic. Except it's also off balance and gives off a creepy vibe like you are about to be robbed or taken advantage of. These are all feeling you do not want your customers to have while viewing your sign which represents your business. The use three different types of font, different sizes and different boldness which makes people feel unbalanced and not at ease when viewing the sign which is probably a good thing since they will most likely rip you off anyway.

Some would argue this sign serves its purpose and is very balanced. I would argue though for a laundry mat to have a filthy cloth sign that looks like it is made from left over socks is a bad thing. They should honest just tear it done because it looks like it is about to fall over and it gives me an anxious feeling because of all of the text crammed in to such a small area.
